What is a Packaged System?

Trane Package system, Ogden NC.What is a Packaged System?

When it comes time for purchasing a new heating and air system there are many options these days to choose from.  With so many system options sometimes it’s hard to decide which system will be the perfect fit for your home.  One product that Trane offers is a  packaged system.  There are several types of packaged systems to choose from.  These systems may seem confusing to some, but no need to worry, you won’t have to make any decisions alone. O’Brien Service Company is always here to help!  We offer complimentary in home evaluations. One of our professionals can explain the different packaged system options and functions.  Here is a brief description of each packaged system so you can get familiar with their functions.

Packaged heat pump

A packaged heat pump is what the name entails, a heat pump packed into one cabinet!  In the Wilmington NC area you see a lot of split system heat pumps, which are heat pumps that have an outdoor unit and an air handler indoors.  This packaged system does not require an indoor unit.  These are great systems and will heat and cool your home efficiently.  One difference from the split system heat pump is that their SEER rating (how efficiently the system cools) only goes to 16 SEER.  Whereas split system heat pumps can go up to 20 SEER.

Packaged dual fuel “gas pack”

This packaged system packs a heat pump and gas heating into one!  The heat pump portion will cool your home, and when the heat pump cannot keep up heating your home, the gas heating will kick in.  This is an excellent system for those who like their home extra warm during the winter months.  Also depending on the price of gas, sometimes it is cheaper to heat your home using gas over electric heat strips.  This is still considered newer technology, and is a great option for our area.

Packaged gas electric

This packaged system combines a straight ac system and gas heating.  So you’re either using the ac cooling or gas heating, there is no electrical heating in this system.

As mentioned earlier, O’Brien Service Company can help you decide if a packaged system will benefit your home and which type is the best option.  For more information on package systems, visit Trane’s website to learn about specific systems.  You can always contact us with further questions or to set up your free in home evaluation!
