Our Air Conditioning Products
At O’Brien Service Company, we offer a range of options to cool your home. When it comes time to have an AC installation, you want to be certain you are receiving the best quality products. Here at O’Brien, that is what we deliver. From Trane heat pumps to WaterFurnace geothermal systems to Mitsubishi ductless mini split systems, we only install top-of-the-line equipment for your home. Below is a brief summary of the air conditioning systems available at O’Brien Service Company.
A heat pump is a central cooling unit that also heats and cools your home. They are incredibly popular in our area since we don’t usually experience extreme temperatures.
Heat pumps can keep you cool in Wilmington’s summer months and warm during our winters. When choosing a heat pump, you will have a variety of options to pick from. Your heat pump installation will consist of two units, the outdoor condenser, and the indoor air handler.
Straight AC System
Straight AC is also a central cooling unit but can only provide AC to your home. Because of this detail, straight AC is not as common around the Wilmington area as the heat pump. However, a furnace can be matched with this unit to keep you toasty during the winter.
The geothermal system belongs in the central cooling category as well. Just like the heat pump, geothermal can provide heating and cooling to your home all year long. To do this, the geothermal system uses the earth’s natural energy, making it an environmentally friendly option. Also, in most cases, it is the most energy-efficient choice.
However, the installation price can be costly. Nonetheless, with assistance from financing, tax credits, and energy savings each month, it’s a great investment with tons of benefits.

Ductless Mini Split
A Ductless Mini-Split, as the name entails, is a heating and cooling unit that does not require any ductwork to operate. So if you live in a home that currently does not have a duct system or you’re adding an addition to your home, this could be a great option for you.
The system consists of one outdoor unit and at least one mounted indoor unit, connected by a refrigerant line. The indoor unit will heat or cool the space where it’s installed. It’s also an option to install multiple mini splits to cool and heat several rooms.
Two big reasons that customers choose ductless AC are:
- it is a zone-controlled system, meaning you can change the temperature in one room without affecting the temperature of the rest of your home.
- Ductless AC can be more cost-effective to install and maintain than other options.

Air Conditioner Sizing
If your HVAC system is too small for your home, it will never be able to maintain a comfortable temperature. Ultimately, it will lower the life expectancy due to the system overworking.
On the other hand, if the air conditioning system is too large for your home, it will also lower the life expectancy. This is due to the HVAC system constantly switching on and off which may cause humidity problems.
In addition to the lowered life expectancy and humidity problems, not having the right size HVAC system can lead to high energy bills and wear on your system. Not to mention it won’t keep your home comfortable.
AC Installation Cost
It’s very important to know the right size HVAC system needed for your home before you proceed with an AC installation. The only way to confirm that your system is sized correctly is during an in-home evaluation where one of our Comfort Specialists will perform a load calculation.
No company should provide an estimate over the phone without visiting your home. At O’Brien, we take our time during the evaluation. Our goal is to ensure that the HVAC systems we offer are the best options for your home. We want to make sure we match you with the right-sized system.

“From my first call I was extremely happy with the professionalism, desire to accommodate my schedule, and the attention to detail. Mike actually arrived a couple of minutes early to meet with me about replacing a 20+ year old system. He thoroughly explained my options, answered my questions, and gave me a couple of choices. I felt confident in my choice and knew exactly what the installers would do. The installers also arrived on time. They again explained what they were going to do, how long it would take, and located the electrical panel so that they wouldn’t have to disturb me as they worked. The install was completed right on schedule, everything was cleaned up, and I was given a tutorial on my new thermostat. Mike returned another day to make sure that I wasn’t having any problems with the system or the thermostat and to answer any questions that I had. O’Brien’s customer service, professionalism, products, product cost, and attention to detail can’t be beat. O’Brien is an outstanding company. They should be your first and only choice in HVAC companies.”
