Air conditioning system not cooling well or not cooling at all? There are several problems that can cause this. One being a refrigerant leak in your HVAC system. This article will explain what options you have if your system is diagnosed with a refrigerant leak.
What a Refrigerant Leak in your HVAC System Means
Your heating and cooling system will never need to have refrigerant added unless there is a leak. Once a technician has discovered that a leak is present there are a few different steps that can be taken. Depending on the severity of the leak, and the age of the systems options will vary.
Gas and Go
This is not a permanent fix for a refrigerant leak in your HVAC system. This simply means a technician is adding refrigerant to get the system running again. The refrigerant added could last for a while, or it may not even last a day depending on the size of the leak. Which is why a gas and go service is not a permanent solution to a refrigerant leak in your HVAC system.
Leak Search
Our technicians can perform a leak search to identify where the system is leaking. By performing a leak search they can find a solution to this problem. Depending on what part is leaking the price will vary to fix the leak. If it’s a relatively new system using r410a, then this is usually a good option. Especially if the parts are still under warranty. However, a large repair on an older, unreliable system may not be the best decision.
New System Replacement
Although this is not what every customer wants to hear, sometimes replacement may be the best choice. If you have a refrigerant leak on an aging system, it’s best to at least consider replacement as a possibility. If the repair cost is high, and the system is old, it may not be the best idea to spend a lot of money on the system. Particularly if the system still uses r22 refrigerant. Since r22 is being phased out it is very costly. After one repair there is no saying when the next one will be. For system replacements we offer complimentary in-home evaluations, in order to compare the costs.
