Heating Repair, Wilmington NC. O'Brien Heating and AirHeating Repair in Wilmington NC

With the cold weather starting to creep into the Wilmington NC area, that means it’s time to turn on our heating systems.  When turning on your heating system, if you notice any problems you could be in need of a heating repair.  Here are some tips that will notify you that you may be in need of a heating repair.

Auxiliary heat is constantly running.

Your auxiliary heat is your secondary heat source when the heat pump cannot maintain your comfort level. If it is freezing outside and you set your indoor temperature high, then your auxiliary heat will come on.  If the outdoor temperature is mild, and your indoor temperature has been reasonably set, your heat pump shouldn’t be continuously running on auxiliary heat.   Therefore, it might need a heating repair.  There are several things that could cause your heating system to only run on auxiliary heat. Though, you’ll need a professional to diagnose the cause.

Noise.

Some heating systems naturally make noises. So, you should not be alarmed if you hear something.  Although, if your system starts making a new noise that you’ve never heard before, it could need a heating repair.  A noise is something you should not wait to call about.  Be sure to call right away if you hear unusual noises from your heating system.

Heater not keeping up; “insufficient heating”.

This does not mean that if your system will not heat your home to 80⁰ when the outdoor temperature is 25⁰ there is a problem. If your system is not heating well, and the outdoor temperature rises but your indoor temperature continues to drop, your heating system might need a repair.  A heat pump’s efficiency drops as the outdoor temperature does.  But, it should still be able to keep your home a comfortable temperature.  If you’re confused about if you need a heating repair or if your heat pump is doing all it can, give our office a call.

Heater not coming on.

If your outdoor unit, thermostat, or any part of your system is not coming on, there are things you can do before calling for a heating system repair. Check the breakers first.  If you have a gas furnace be sure the pilot light hasn’t gone out, or try resetting your thermostat.  If these solutions do not work, call O’Brien to have one of our experienced technicians diagnose why your system in not running.

High energy bills.

During the colder months your energy bills will vary based on the weather. Like mentioned earlier, in colder temperatures your heat strips or auxiliary heat may have to assist the heat pump.  Which will increase your energy bills.  Though if you see an extreme spike in your energy bills, this could be the sign of a problem.

Those are the main issues that might lead to a heating system repair and you can visit Trane’s website for more examples.  It is best to have a problem taken care of quickly before it becomes a larger, more expensive issue.  Be sure to call O’Brien for all your heating repairs.  Also, don’t forget to have your heating system checked annually to help decrease heating system issues.  If you have any questions about your heating system don’t hesitate to call us at (910) 799-6611.
